The best day of 2007.

Welcome to Neuschwenstein Castle. For two years I stared at my cube neighbor's giant wintertime poster of this castle. I remember the first time I saw it -- I said "I don't know where in the world it is, but one day I will make it there."

It was built by "mad" King Ludwig II. He was conveniently born just down the hill in his father's castle, which makes for a great view from up the hill:

Neuschwenstein was the inspiration for Walt Disney's castle at Disneyland. The interior is just as magnificent as the exterior, and that's saying something because the exterior looks like this:
This shot was hard to get. I had to do a little bit of mountain climbing, and the powder got deep.
Conditions were perfect -- I couldn't have asked for anything more. All I wanted was to see the castle, but if I managed to get sunshine or snow, I'd be really happy. On the day I went, I got both. A meter of snow had fallen just days earlier, which made for the perfect wintertime Bavarian setting the whole way out from Munich.

This now completes my top three goals for Europe this year:
1. Neuschwenstein Castle
2. See a symphony performed by the Vienna Philharmonic
3. Sheep herding with border collies in Wales
